In her new home in Ithaca, NY, Naomi Sommers reflects with some surprise on the past near-decade spent in the lovely, medieval German town of Göttingen. That diversion was not expected, not always desired, but certainly an educative and over-all good adventure. She left Germany with three children under the age of six, a husband moving forward with his fascinating career in research of turbulence and fluid dynamics, having just begun to feel at home in that foreign land. Then it was time to go!

Naomi Sommers grew up in a home full of music and instruments, performing since middle school with her parents and brother in the Sommers Rosenthal Family Band. Over the years she has sung and played flute, banjo, and guitar on more than 15 records released on her father Phil’s independent American Melody label, and has recorded three albums under her own name, as well as one with old-time country slow-grass duo Gray Sky Girls.

Naomi’s most recent album, “Gentle As The Sun”, was recorded in Nashville, produced by the acclaimed musician/producer Jim Rooney (John Prine, Iris Dement, Nanci Griffith, Bonnie Raitt).  Jim’s enthusiasm over Naomi’s songs and her voice prompted him to end a hiatus from the music business to make this record.  The album was engineered by David Fergusson (Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin) and features a backup band of some of Nashville’s finest musicians.  Naomi’s trusted family and friends traveled from New England to play on the record as well.  She was thrilled to present the resulting collection of songs, the culmination of years of devotion to the craft of songwriting and to the merging of traditional and contemporary styles in American music.

While living Germany, Naomi toured in the Netherlands and the UK. “Gentle As the Sun” was released by Continental Records in the Netherlands, and received stellar reviews & radio airplay in the UK and Europe. Naomi’s most recent musical project is a new album, released fall 2016, with her father and brother, melding jazz (brother Daniel plays trumpet) and bluegrass (father Phil is an accomplished bluegrass musician and songwriter). The Sommers Rosenthal Family band is proud to release their first album (after recording together for many years but not as an official band), and they hope to find themselves "Down The Road" from your neighborhood, playing a concert, very soon! Look out the window, that might be them tromping through your back yard!
